Description
This mid-19th century building at 55 Ashton Road, along with 54 and 54A, is a two-storey and attic flatted villa featuring classical details, a coach house, and an outbuilding at the rear. The front is constructed of pink sandstone ashlar, while the rear and sides are made of coursed and squared stugged rubble with polished dressings. Architectural features include a base course, a channelled ground floor, a band course above the ground floor, and an eaves cornice with a blocking course. The first-floor windows are architraved with recessed aprons, consoled cornices, and pediments, supported by ashlar mullions.
On the north (front) elevation, there is a central doorway flanked by Ionic pilasters, leading to a panelled door with a narrow six-pane fanlight above. A single window is positioned above this doorway on the first floor. The outer bays are bowed and feature tripartite windows, with two bowed tripartite dormers that have piended roofs.
The south (rear) elevation includes a curved rubble-built forestair with decorative cast-iron railings that provide access to first-floor doorways, one of which has a six-pane fanlight, with single windows flanking it. The rear also features modern dormers.
The west elevation is gabled, with single windows located in the centre and left bay, and a chamfered corner above the ground floor on the right.
The coach house and outbuilding are gabled, constructed from rubble and harled, with a chamfered corner and altered openings. The small gabled outbuilding has exposed rafters on the south side.
The windows throughout the property are primarily timber sash and case, mostly with four-pane or plate glass glazing, while the dormers feature small pane glazing. The roof is slate, with two gablehead stacks located on the east and west sides.
The interior was not seen in 1993.
