Description

50 Ashton Road is a villa from the early 19th century that underwent significant remodeling in the later 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure featuring later projecting bays with prominent columnar mullions and a side entrance porch. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar or render that mimics ashlar, with a base course, quoin strips, a band course, and a moulded cill course at the first floor. The eaves overhang with exposed rafters, and the reveals are stop-chamfered. The narrow lights in the bays are divided by slender colonnetes topped with foliate capitals.

On the front elevation, the original door in the centre bay has been blocked and replaced with a window featuring a Corinthian pilastered surround and a dentilled cornice above. There is a single window above this. To the left, there is a two-storey rectangular projection with tripartite windows and narrow lights on the return, which break the eaves and are capped with decorative iron brattishing. To the right, a two-storey bowed bay has five-light windows and a shallow conical roof. There is also a later single-storey addition with a pitched roof on the outer right.

The east elevation has a gabled design with a later timber entrance porch that is part-glazed, a boarded gablehead, and carved timber corbels. The west elevation is also gabled and features the later addition mentioned earlier. The south elevation has irregularly spaced windows and a small addition to the left.

The villa has timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing and a slate roof, along with three gablehead stacks on the east and west sides. The eaves feature a moulded gutter.

The boundary wall includes a low wall at the front with two coped gatepiers, and a taller rubble boundary wall on the side.
