Description

Redbraes is a villa built in the earlier 19th century, with some additions and alterations from the early 20th century. It is a two-storey, four-bay gabled villa situated on a prominent south-facing site that overlooks the town. The exterior features wet-dashed walls with cream sandstone ashlar dressings, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters and bargeboards, and chamfered arrises. The windows are regularly spaced, with first-floor windows that break the eaves, topped with gabled dormerheads and finials.

On the north (entrance) elevation, there is an advanced and gabled left bay that includes an expressed flue and an apex stack. The centre left bay has an ashlar porch located in the re-entrant angle, with a door flanked by narrow windows, a cornice, and a balustraded parapet. To the immediate right at ground level is a window, and there is a first-floor window at the centre right bay positioned hard under the eaves. To the outer right, there is a later single-storey garage.

The south elevation features a broad gabled bay to the right with a canted window at ground level and a first-floor window in the gablehead. The left bay is set back and slightly lower, with a garage set back to the far left. The property also has a basement.

The villa has multi-pane timber sash and case windows, a roof covered with grey slates, and coped dressed stacks with octagonal and terracotta barley-twist cans.

The interior was not seen in 1994.

The property is enclosed by square corniced ashlar gatepiers and a round coped whinstone rubble boundary wall of varying height.
