Description

3 Merchiston Park is a villa built around 1860, featuring two stories and three bays, along with single-storey side wings. The exterior is made of cream sandstone, squared and snecked stugged rubble, accented with stugged ashlar dressings. A string course runs above the ground floor, with chamfered reveals and a blocking course that includes shallow blind arcading.

The southwest (front) elevation has a slightly advanced gabled central bay and a projecting entrance porch topped with a parapet that rises over a central blank armorial shield. The porch features a roll-moulded doorway, a panelled door, and a tiled vestibule, with narrow windows on the returns. Above the porch, there is a single window on the first floor, and a small arrowslit window at the gablehead. The outer bays consist of full-height canted windows that just break the eaves, with a parapet that bears a tablet. The single-storey side wing on the outer right has a parapet that rises to a semi-circle over a single window, while the side wing on the outer left has been converted into a garage.

The southeast elevation is two bays wide, with a gabled bay to the left that has a rebuilt apex stack and a single-storey side wing at ground floor level, along with single windows on the first floor above. The northwest elevation mirrors the southeast elevation and features a wallhead stack on the left bay. The northeast (rear) elevation has three bays, all gabled, with single windows.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, mostly with two-pane upper sashes, six-pane lower sashes, and a thicker central astragal. The roof is slate with lead flashings, and there are two apex stacks and one wallhead stack. The property features ornamental gutterheads and downpipe brackets.

The surrounding area includes a tall rubble wall with semi-circular coping at the rear and sides, a low wall at the front with flat coping, and later gates.
