Description

6, 8, 10 Merchiston Place is a four-storey, five-bay tenement building designed by Dunn & Findlay around 1905. The front is made of cream sandstone with an ashlar finish, while the rear and sides are constructed from squared and snecked rubble. Notable architectural features include a cill course on the first and second floors, an eaves cornice, and third-floor windows that break the parapet in a mansard attic, which have ovolo moulded reveals. The windows are architraved, and there are semi-circular pedimented and gabled dormer heads with ashlar mullions. The doorways are moulded and feature panelled doors with rectangular glass fanlights.

On the northwest elevation facing Merchiston Place, there is a central common stair doorway flanked by main door flats. The centre and right of centre bays have bipartite windows, while the left of centre bay has a single window. The outer bays feature full-height canted windows topped with half-pyramidal roofs for the canted attic windows. The third floor includes two pedimented dormers, one bipartite window under a lugged gable to the right, and a corniced wallhead stack to the left.

The west elevation has single windows in a gabled bay to the left of centre, which has a corniced apex stack, and a corniced wallhead stack to the right.

The building features plate glass timber sash and case windows, a green slate roof with lead flashings, and two wallhead stacks along with one apex stack. The eaves gutters and gutterheads are moulded.

The interior was not seen in 1992. The property is enclosed by a low stepped rubble boundary wall at the front and a tall rubble wall at the side.
