Description

220 and 222 South Street in Perth is a four-storey Free Scots Renaissance corner tenement designed by James Bow Dunn and James Leslie Findlay, built between 1903 and 1904. The building is located on a gushet site and features a copper ogee dome with commercial premises on the ground floor. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar with moulded ashlar dressings and has moulded string courses on the second and fourth storeys.

The prominent corner bay has a canted three-window design with a curving lugged architraved doorpiece at the ground level, which leads to a semi-octagonal oriel that extends two storeys, topped by a circular fourth storey. The flanking bays are pilastered and have a block parapet, all capped by a flattened copper ogee roof with a double-bracketed cornice and a weathervane finial at the apex. The flanking bays display an irregular arrangement of windows, with tall wallhead stacks positioned near the centre and varied dormer treatments breaking the eaves, featuring Flemish-inspired pediments on the outer bays. The rear of the building is constructed of brick.

The windows throughout the first, second, and third floors are timber sash and case, with six-pane glazing in the upper sections and two-pane glazing in the lower sections. The ground floor commercial premises predominantly feature large non-traditional replacement plate glass windows. The roof is slate, and the building includes cast-iron rainwater goods and coped stacks with clay cans.
