210 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh

This is a four-storey tenement block designed by Dunn & Findlay, built around 1905 on an acute corner site in Edinburgh. The building incorporates Scottish 17th-century detailing and features a bank at ground-floor level on the corner. It is constructed of cream ashlar, with a prominent three-bay chamfered corner. A notable characteristic is the first and second-floor cill course, eaves cornice, and fourth-floor windows that break the parapet within the attic space. Windows have ovolo moulded reveals, while those on the first floor are corniced. Dormerheads are semi-circular and gabled, with ashlar mullions, and doorways are moulded with panelled doors and rectangular plate glass fanlights.

The northeast corner elevation showcases three bays, with a broad chamfered gabled bay at the centre and bowed bays flanking it, set within re-entrant angles as round towers. The bank entrance is situated within the chamfer, featuring a round-arched, keystoned doorpiece flanked by engaged banded columns and cornice. A semi-circular plate glass fanlight is above the door. A two-storey corbelled canted window sits above the entrance, and panelled angle pilasters at the third floor frame a tripartite window with a dentilled cornice. A bull's-eye window is located in the gablehead, and curved windows are present in the outer bays, with pilastered towerheads and bracketted, finialled ogee roofs.

The northeast (Merchiston Place) elevation is six bays wide, with the main entrance flat on the outer right, flanked by a single window to the left and a bipartite window to the right. The common stair entrance is flanked by single windows in the centre. A narrow single window and a wide, depressed-arch window with border glazing are on the outer left, while bipartite windows are corbelled from the first floor under a lugged gable in the outer right bay and to the left of centre. Single windows fill the remaining bays.

The southeast (Bruntsfield Place) elevation is five bays wide with the main door flat to the left, flanked by bipartite windows. To the right are a bipartite window and a wide, depressed-arch window with border glazing. A blank bay with a tall wallhead stack is located to the right of centre. Bipartite windows are in the remaining bays, with the outer bays corbelled above the ground floor and gableheads to the third-floor windows. The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a green slate mansard roof with lead flashings, one wallhead stack, mutual corniced stacks, moulded eaves gutters and gutter-heads.

The interior was not inspected in 1992.

A low, stepped boundary wall runs along the frontages of numbers 2-10 Merchiston Place and 212-226 Bruntsfield Place.
