Description
32 Northgate in Peebles is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey and basement classical villa with three symmetrical bays. The building is constructed from whinstone coursed rubble, featuring grey sandstone dressings, and has a rendered basement. The first-floor windows are adorned with cornices and shouldered architraves.
On the west (front) elevation, there is a round-arched doorway with deep cavetto-moulded jambs, a panelled door, and a semicircular astragalled fanlight, all framed by a pedimented doorcase with anthemion brackets. This entrance is accessed by steps that are flanked by lion sculptures on pedestals. The fenestration is regular throughout.
The east (rear) elevation features tall round-arched stair windows at the centre and a full-height canted bay with a roof that breaks the eaves on the outer left. There are single windows to the right.
On the south elevation, there is a central first-floor window with a hortus fenestralis, and two corniced wallhead stacks. The north elevation has a single first-floor window to the left and a corniced wallhead stack.
The villa has timber sash and case windows, with two-pane upper sashes and four-pane lower sashes. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a piend and platform design, along with three stacks.
The interior was not seen in 1994. The property is complemented by a low boundary wall at the front, which includes square-plan sandstone gatepiers with chamfered arrises and pyramidal coping topped with ball finials.
