Description
The Masonic Hall, located at 9 Northgate in Peebles, is likely from the late 18th century, with some later alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay house featuring a later Gibbsian doorpiece and a large extension at the rear. The front is finished with cement render, while the rear and sides are covered in pebbledash. The ground floor render is lined to mimic ashlar stone.
On the front elevation, there is a round-arched doorway at the center with Gibbsian jambs and a recut keystone that bears the date 1716. Above the doorway is an open pediment supported by scrolled brackets, featuring an armorial shield in the tympanum. The outer bays on both the ground and first floors have single windows.
The rear elevation showcases a large rectangular two-storey extension with bipartite windows and a piend roof. The front features timber sash and case windows with small leaded panes, while the rear has 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered in purple slate, and the building is adorned with distinctive scrolled skewputts that have a rope motif.
The interior was not seen in 1994.
