Description
The Market Cross in High Street, Peebles, features a shaft that may date back to the 15th century. It includes a sundial dated 1699 and a weathervane dated 1662. The structure was re-erected in 1895 and moved to a new plinth in 1965. The cross stands on a large octagonal sandstone plinth with steps, which supports a smaller octagonal pedestal. The octagonal sandstone shaft has a small plain shield on alternating faces and is topped with a richly carved octagonal capital. A facetted cubic sundial with copper gnomons rests on the capital, and above it is a copper weathervane with scrolled brackets.
