Description

1 Bridgegate in Peebles is a three-storey corner building dated 1903, featuring a shop on the ground floor and a turret at the corner. It is constructed from coursed stugged cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. The ground floor has a base course and polished ashlar, with a cornice and moulded eaves course. The shop windows are made of plate glass, and the upper floors have chamfered arrises and shaped aprons.

On the east elevation facing Bridgegate, the building has a chamfered corner with a segmental-headed doorway that includes a glazed door and a plate glass fanlight. Above this, there is a corbelled turret at the second floor with three windows and a conical roof topped with a cast-iron finial. To the right, there are two bays; on the ground floor, the left bay has a shop window, while the right bay features a panelled door with a plate glass fanlight and a pediment, along with a closet window at the far right. The first floor has windows in both bays, and there is a framed panel at the second floor to the left, with a window that has a crowstep gabled dormerhead to the right.

The south elevation facing Northgate consists of a single bay with a chamfered corner to the right. On the ground floor, the shop window is displaced to the right, with a chamfered corner to the left leading to a wynd beyond. The upper floor windows are displaced to the left, situated below a consoled wallhead stack.

The building features timber sash and case four-pane windows, grey slate roofing, ashlar-coped skews, corniced ashlar stacks, and bulbous cans.
