Description

1-9 Church Street in Tranent is a two-storey building dated 1905, situated on an irregular site. The ground floor features shops, while residential accommodation is located above. The structure is made of squared and snecked, bull-faced cream sandstone with red sandstone ashlar dressings, and the ground floor has modern shop fronts. The building has rounded arrises.

On the southwest elevation, the facade has five bays, with two bays on the left set at an oblique angle. The outer bays at ground level are flanked by red sandstone pilasters, and there is a billet moulded cornice above the ground floor sandstone frieze. The three bays in the centre and right on the first floor feature two corniced windows that break the eaves in a semi-circular gablehead at the centre, which includes a carved and pedimented date panel, with ball finials on either side and a fluted neck leading to a corniced stack above. There are bipartite windows flanking this section, each breaking the eaves and set within open pediments. The two bays to the left of centre also have bipartite windows that break the eaves, with one set in a semi-circular pediment and the outer window in an open pediment.

The southeast elevation is irregular, featuring a gable on the left that is largely blank, with a first-floor window to the right and a voussoired oculus in the attic. A modern shop window is present at ground level to the right, flanked by two windows on the outer left. The first floor has two windows separated by a set-off wallhead stack.

The northeast elevation includes a door with a first-floor window above it. The building displays a variety of glazing patterns in its sash and case windows, with plate glass in the lower sashes and small-pane upper sashes on the principal southwest elevation. It features corniced stacks, ashlar coped skews, and is roofed with Westmoreland slates and terracotta ridge tiles on the southwest side.
