Description

36 Castle Street in Duns is a late 19th-century, two-storey, two-bay shop with a flat above. The building features cream sandstone, with stugged and coursed ashlar on the Castle Street side and rubble on the sides, along with polished dressings and stop-chamfered arrises.

The southwest elevation facing Castle Street has a gabled design. At the ground level, there is a three-bay ashlar shopfront, which includes a stop-roll-moulded panelled door with etched glass at the center, flanked by plate glass shop windows. Above this, a band course supports a shop sign. The angles at the ground are chamfered and corbelled to square above the band course. The first floor has two windows, with a small window featuring an eroded datestone above in the gablehead.

The southeast elevation is three-bay, with a door at the center and a small window on the first floor, along with windows on each floor of the flanking bays.

The northwest elevation is irregular and also three-bay. At the ground level, there is a window to the left and a blocked coal-shute to the right. The first floor has windows in the left and center bays.

The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows. The crowstepped gable features corbel skewputts and a corniced ashlar stack facing Castle Street, while the rear has ashlar coped skews and a rendered stack. The roof is covered with grey slates.
