Description
28B Castle Street in Duns is a late 19th-century, two-storey, two-bay shop with a flat above. The building features cream sandstone with stugged and coursed ashlar on the Castle Street side, while the sides are constructed of rubble, accented with polished dressings and stop-chamfered arrises.
The southwest elevation facing Castle Street has a gabled roof and includes a three-bay rendered shopfront at the ground level. At the center, there is a panelled door with etched glass and a rectangular fanlight, flanked by plate glass shop windows. A tiled base course rises to the window cills, and there is a band course above that displays the shop sign. The ground level has chamfered angles that are corbelled to a square above the band course. On the first floor, there are two windows, along with a small window in the gablehead.
The southeast elevation is irregular with three bays. The left side is blank, while the center features a door with a window above it on the first floor. The right side has windows on both floors.
The northwest elevation has a regular three-bay layout with four-pane timber sash and case windows. It has a crowstepped gable with corbel skewputts and a reduced corniced ashlar stack facing Castle Street, along with ashlar coped skews and a rebuilt brick stack at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slates.
