Description

3-5 Eastgate in Peebles is a late 19th-century, three-storey, five-bay building featuring shops on the ground floor. It is constructed of cream stugged sandstone with polished ashlar dressings and consists of two distinct units.

Units 3 and 5 have three bays. On the ground floor, there is a round-headed doorway on the left and a four-bay shop on the right, topped with a cornice. The two left bays of the upper floors are identical, with windows that have moulded architraves, cill courses, and aprons. The first-floor windows feature pediments, while the second-floor windows break the eaves and have open pediments with finials. The right bay is angle chamfered at the ground and first floors, with corbelling leading to a turret at the second floor, which has a pepperpot roof and a ball finial.

Units 7 and 9 are two bays and are set back from the street. The ground floor features a modern shopfront on the left and a shouldered doorway on the right. The upper floors are identical, with the right bay showcasing a canted window that is corbelled from a pier at the ground level, topped with a truncated pyramidal roof and decorative lead flashing. The left bay has plain windows with cill courses. Most of the windows are modern. The roof is covered with grey slates, with fish-scale detailing on the turrets. The building has ashlar coped skews and corniced ashlar stacks.
