47 Northgate, Peebles

43 and 45 Northgate in Peebles is a later 19th-century, two-storey and attic, three-bay tenement building that features shops on the ground floor and a basement at the rear. The structure is made of coursed whinstone rubble with a squared and snecked stugged sandstone front, accented by rock-faced dressings.

On the front elevation, there is a pend opening with a stop-chamfered lintel on the outer left side. Flanking this are two well-designed shopfronts, with a common stair doorway to the right that has roll-moulded surrounds. The shopfronts feature panelled doors and a continuous fascia supported by console brackets and fleur-de-lys gablets. The first floor has single windows, while the roof includes two canted dormers on either side of a gabled louvred ventilator, which is supported by carved brackets.

The rear elevation is three-storey with irregular openings that have been altered, and it includes two modern dormers alongside a wraggle from a former gabled addition. The south elevation is gabled with an apex stack and also shows a wraggle from a former gable that adjoins it.

The front of the building has four-pane timber sash and case windows, while the rear features some twelve-pane and replacement windows. There are two-leaf panelled doors and a purple slate roof with two apex stacks.

The interior was not seen during the 1994 assessment.
