Description
Western House, located at 76-78 Albert Road in Gourock, is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay flatted villa featuring classical architectural details. The building is constructed of red sandstone with a rendered front elevation, while the rear and sides are made of coursed stugged rubble with polished dressings. It has a base course, shallow angle pilasters, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The windows on the ground and first floors are architraved, with those on the ground floor featuring bracketed cills and consoled pediments.
On the northwest (front) elevation, there is a central doorway flanked by fluted Ionic columns, with a cornice and blocking course that bears a tablet. The fenestration is regular above and in the outer bays. The southeast (rear) elevation includes a full-height semicircular stone stairwell topped with a conical roof and a single window at the center, along with windows in the outer bays. There is a small modern lean-to structure in the re-entrant to the right.
The northeast elevation is gabled and has a single window to the right. Most of the windows have been replaced with modern versions, but four timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing remain on the rear. The roof is slate, featuring a gablehead stack on the northeast side.
The property also includes a low rubble boundary wall at the front, with two coped gatepiers. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1993.
