Description

The Bonded Store, located at 9 Oswald Street in Glasgow, is a classical commercial building dating from 1878. It stands four storeys tall with an attic and is situated on a corner site, featuring shops on the ground floor and a six-bay bond structure with three storeys at the rear facing Oswald Street.

The main block is constructed from polished ashlar and is characterized by giant shallow pilasters that rise through full-height, separate glazed bays. The windows throughout are made of plate glass and are of the sash and case type, arranged in three-light, two-light, and single-light configurations, with pilaster mullions and architraves on the first, second, and third floors. Each floor has a plain entablature, and there is a moulded cill band on the first and second floors. The building features four three-light arcaded full dormers with antae pilasters, pediments adorned with antefixae, and acroteria facing Broomielaw, as well as two dormers on Oswald Street. The roof is hipped and covered with slate.

The lower block on Oswald Street also uses polished ashlar, with a channelled design at the ground floor set on a plinth. The cornice at the ground floor continues from the main block. The windows here are casement style with T-pane glazing, architraved on the upper floors and lugged and shouldered on the first floor. The building has an eaves cornice and a parapet, with a plain northern return to the lane.
