Description

42 and 44 Jamaica Street in Glasgow is a five-storey commercial building designed by George Bell in 1897, showcasing a free classical style. The structure features four by eight bays and a curved corner bay, constructed with polished red ashlar and polished granite at the ground floor. It has sash and case windows, plate glass, and etched glass in the public house area, complemented by carved timber cills. Console brackets are positioned beside the corner entrance and above No 44 Jamaica Street, with sculpted, pedimented panels above.

The elevation facing Jamaica Street has bays arranged in a pattern of one to three, with the second and third floors canted. Each floor is corniced, and the first-floor windows are margined. The second floor features console-bracketed elements and a sculpted parapet with masks, along with a segmentally pedimented design over the central canted window. The upper windows are plain, and there is a sculpted frieze over the canted bay, with a raised cornice and parapet at the center.

The elevation on Midland Street mirrors the Jamaica Street elevation, with linked canted bays, while the outer bay is plain, similar to the south bay on Jamaica Street. The building is topped with a slate roof.
