Description

The National Bank of Scotland, located at 22-24 St Enoch Square in Glasgow, is a five-storey and attic commercial building that was begun in 1906 by architect A N Paterson, with sculptural work by Phyllis Archibald. The building features a ground floor banking hall, which was remodeled by Watson and Salmond between 1936 and 1937, and offices on the upper floors. It is designed in the Beaux Arts classical style and has five bays arranged in a 1-3-1 configuration.

The structure is steel-framed and faced with white ashlar, while the rear elevation is finished in glazed brick with metal-framed windows in shallow canted bays. The central bays include the main bank entrance, which is framed by an architrave with simple decoration and topped with a sculpted escutcheon. This entrance features a corbelled fanlight and bronze doors with a relief frieze inscribed with "IN PATRIAM FIDELIS," flanked by metal-framed windows. Above the ground floor cill band, there are plain 12-pane sash and case windows in architraves on the first, second, and third floors, with elliptically headed windows and keyblocks at the third floor. Sculpted panels between the bays support a simple cornice, while the fourth floor has plain windows with 9-pane glazing and a consoled cornice in the central bays, along with a dentil band and mutule cornice. The attic features a central open pedimented, round-headed window with a sculpted tympanum, flanked by keyblocked windows and panelled piers between the bays, topped with a raised parapet.

The outer bays are symmetrical, with an entrance to the upper floors at No 24, which features a carved timber, recessed, arched doorpiece. The outer bays have one-third height architraves and figure sculptures above the ground floor representing Prudence, Adventure, Commerce, and Security, flanking small keyblocked lights. Outer pilaster strips rise to the third floor, and there are plain narrow windows with 8-pane glazing on the first, second, and third floors, set within projecting aedicules with open pediments and sculpted tympana at the third floor. The fourth floor windows are adorned with richly sculpted surrounds, and there are balustraded balconies in front of elliptically headed dormers, along with corniced end stacks.

Inside, the ground floor banking hall is marble-lined and features pilasters and square pillars, along with a carved timber counter, fittings, and some original furniture.
