Description
134-156 Argyle Street in Glasgow is a free classical warehouse designed by Horatio K Bromhead and completed in 1903. The building stands six stories tall and features a canted angle turret. The ground floor has been modernized with shops, while the upper floors consist of 13 x 5 bays and a single corner bay. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with sash and case windows, some of which have been altered to T-pane casements set on a cill band, and graduated recessed architraves.
The façade is enhanced by a giant order of Corinthian pilasters and semi-engaged columns that rise from the first to the second floors, repeating this design at the third and fourth floors, with sculpted panels between the floors. A modillion cornice is present at the third and fifth floors, and there is a continuous balustrade with panelled, corniced piers.
The corner section features canted bays, a balcony at the first floor, and independent circular balconies at the second floor. Stylized Venetian windows with oculi above are located at the fourth and fifth floors, while a polygonal turret is topped with balconies, a consoled cornice, a balustrade, and a columned roof lantern.
On the elevation facing Argyle Street, the bays are arranged in a pattern of 3-1-3-1-3, with the three-bay sections breaking forward. The central doorway is flanked by stooping Atlantes that support a curving balcony at the first floor. Above this, independent balconies are found in the three-bay section of the second floor, which is pedimented and features a stepped balustrade and Venetian windows similar to those on the corner section at the fourth and fifth floors.
The elevation facing Buchanan Street features a three-bay section that mirrors the outer bays of the Argyle Street elevation.
