Description

Wylie & Lochead's is a combined department store located at 45 Buchanan Street in Glasgow, originally constructed as three separate warehouse premises. The southern section of the building, which was originally Kemp's shawl emporium, was built between 1853 and 1854 and features five storeys, with the fourth and fifth floors added by Boucher and Cousland after a fire in 1883. This section has a cast-iron frame with pilastered masonry ends and small segmental pediments above the end bays.

The central section, which is the original Wylie and Lochead building, was designed by James Sellars of Campbell Douglas and Sellars in 1884, also rebuilt after the 1883 fire. This part showcases a Renaissance-style terracotta frontage with five storeys and an attic. It features Corinthian pilasters on the lower two floors, a central broken segmental pediment with figures above the entrance, and is divided into three bays above the ground floor with banded pilasters. Each bay has three windows, with pilasters on the second floor and columns on the third. The outer bays have bowed windows on the second and third floors, and there are decorated pilasters on the third floor. The building is topped with a balustraded parapet that includes three tall arched dormers, all surmounted by a cast-iron parapet.

Inside, the structure is cast-iron framed and clad in terracotta, featuring fireproof construction. It includes a long saloon that rises five storeys with four main bays, an arched glass roof, and a mahogany staircase.

The northern section, designed by Boucher and Cousland for Mirrlees, is an Italianate-style building with no columns, featuring five storeys and seven bays. The top two storeys were added after the 1883 fire. This section includes consoled pediments above the first-floor windows, segmental pediments on the second floor, architraves on the third, and plain pilasters between the fourth. It also has a balustraded parapet that displays a coat of arms.
