Description

Teachers, located at 14-18 St Enoch Square in Glasgow, is an Italian Renaissance commercial building designed by James Boucher in 1875. The structure stands four storeys tall, featuring a plain glazed ground floor. The facade facing St Enoch Square has three main bays arranged in a 2-3-2 pattern, while there are four unequal, plain return bays on St Enoch Place. The building is constructed of polished ashlar, with channeling between the bays at the first floor.

The central entrance is highlighted by a keyblocked arch, a consoled doorpiece, a shouldered lintel, and a sculpted archivolt with spandrels. Above this, a cornice supports a wrought-iron balcony. The ground floor is adorned with a mutule cornice. The first floor features pilastraded arched windows that are keyblocked with sculpted imposts and fretwork spandrels, along with an entablature that includes a rosette frieze and console cornice.

On the second floor, there is a continuous low wrought-iron balcony, with colonnaded arched windows flanked by slim colonettes and pilasters. The richly sculpted spandrels are complemented by panelled piers with sculpted decoration on the outer bays, along with a sculpted frieze and cornice.

The third floor mirrors the second, featuring continuous recessed sculpted aprons and sculpted heads on the outer piers. The central bay has a coupled console cornice raised above a panel and rosette frieze, topped with a wrought-iron parapet. An end stack is present, featuring outer attached columns.
