Description
46-56 St Enoch Square in Glasgow is a large six-storey office block designed by Alexander Petrie between 1895 and 1899. The building features seven by five unequal bays and is constructed of polished red sandstone. The ground floor has been modernized with shops.
The entrance to St Enoch's Square is arched and has a keystone, while the first floor is channelled and includes a string course at the level of the arched windows. The windows facing the Square are arranged in a pattern of two-three-two-three-two-three-two, and those on Howard Street follow a three-two-three-two-three arrangement.
On the second to fourth floors, there are canted windows in alternate narrow bays, architraved windows, and bracketted balconies on the central windows of the wider bays. The third floor features arched windows. Pilasters extend from the fourth floor to the main cornice, and the building is topped with a balustraded parapet that has bold, corniced dies.
