Description
The Bank of Scotland, located at 24 Sandgate in Ayr, was designed by Alexander Petrie in 1877. This three-storey, seven-bay building features a symmetrical former baronial style and is constructed of ashlar stone. It has a base course, a cornice at the ground floor, and cill courses on the first and second floors, along with a cornice.
On the southeast elevation, there is a segmental-headed entrance in the advanced central bay, which includes a timber door and a letterbox fanlight. Flanking the door are consoled brackets that support a pierced balcony on the first floor. The windows above are aligned regularly, with segmental-arched windows on the ground and second floors and square-headed windows on the first floor, all featuring a continuous stepped hoodmould. There is also a roundel in the crowstepped gable. To the outer right, there is another segmental-headed entrance with a letterbox fanlight. The remaining bays have regular fenestration, and the outer windows on the second floor also feature crowstepped gables.
The ground floor has plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the first floor has four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring crowstepped stone skews, a coped gablehead, and ridge stacks with circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
