Description
6 Cathcart Street in Ayr is a three-storey, three-bay commercial building designed by John Mercer in 1890, forming part of a terrace. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with the ground floor painted. It features a base course, a cornice, and a blocking course. Each bay has arched openings with keyblocks and is flanked by pilasters. There is a corniced band course at the springing line on the ground floor, with tripartite openings in the central bay and bipartite openings in the flanking bays. The central bay rises to form a gablet with a raised panel within.
On the northeast elevation, there is a step leading to the central entrance, which has a two-leaf timber door to the left of a split central arch and a split fanlight above. The shop windows show signs of flaking, and the window to the left is half-infilled. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, with shop glazing at the ground level and textured glazing in the upper panes of the timber windows on the upper floors. The roof is covered with grey slate and features coped brick stacks with circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1998.
