Description
This is a classical five-storey commercial building located at 18, 20, and 22 Jamaica Street in Glasgow, dating from around 1860. The structure features a Grand Central Cinema that was added from the basement to the second floor between 1914 and 1916, designed by William B Whitie. The building has seven bays and is constructed with an iron frame and polished ashlar facing.
The first, second, and third floors are adorned with a plain Ionic glazed pilastrade. At the centre of the first floor, there is a later keyblocked arched window with panelled spandrels and a sculpted frieze. Above this, the panelled bays are fitted with altered cast-iron balconies. All windows are casement style with glazing bars. The fourth floor features a 14-light arched pilastrade, while the building is topped with a plain frieze and a modillion cornice.
