Description
29-35 Gordon Street is a four-storey commercial building dating from around 1875, designed in a Renaissance style. The ground floor features modern shops, while the upper floors have T-pane casement windows arranged in groups of three. The northeast corner has an angled bay with a projecting corniced bay window on the first floor. The building is constructed of polished ashlar and is flanked by giant panelled angle pilasters at the corner bay and in the northern bay, topped with a corniced wallhead stack.
On the first floor, the windows are adorned with sculpted consoles, continuous cornices, panelled tympana, and pilaster architraves. The second floor windows sit on a cill band and have flat pilaster architraves with cornices. A main entablature with a cornice is present at the second floor. The third floor features corniced margined windows, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. A cast-iron parapet with brattishing crowns the building, along with corniced wallhead stacks facing Gordon Street and panelled piers in the attic on the northwest return.
The return to Union Place consists of eight bays, finished in painted ashlar with cill bands for each floor and lugged, margined windows. It has a corniced wallhead stack and a parapet that is raised at the ends.
