Scottish Provident Institution, 49 Meadowside, Dundee

The Scottish Provident Institution, located at 49 Meadowside in Dundee, is a commercial building constructed in 1897. It is a four-storey structure with an attic, featuring seven bays and a classical design. The exterior is made of cream sandstone ashlar, with polished grey and black granite on the ground floor, and it has a concealed slate roof.

The building has a base course and a pilastraded ground floor that supports a parapet with segmental-capped dies. The first floor is channelled, while the second and third floors have a cill course. The corniced balustraded parapet is adorned with pedimented dies, and there are rusticated quoin strips on the first and second floors, along with paired pilasters on the ground and third floors. The windows are two-pane timber sash and case, with round-headed and keystoned designs on the ground floor, and architraved windows with alternate segmental and triangular pediments on the first and second floors. The third floor features round-headed, keystoned, and architraved windows. The skews are ashlar-coped, with a corniced ridge and end stacks.

On the front elevation, there is a central door with a keystoned round-headed doorpiece and channelled pilasters. Above the door, there is a panel inscribed 'SPI' at the parapet, flanked by urn-finialled dies. The front has three windows on either side of the door, and each upper floor contains seven windows. There are also three modern dormers that are partly concealed by the parapet.
