Description

This mid-19th century public house is a four-storey, four-bay commercial building located on a corner site at 51 and 53 Meadowside in Dundee. The front is finished in cream ashlar sandstone, while the ground floor is painted, and the side and rear are constructed from rubble. The building features a concealed roof.

The ground floor is detailed with pilasters and a cornice, and there is a lintel course at the first floor with projecting corbelled lintels. Above this, there are panelled parapets adjoining a cill course at the second floor, and a cill course at the third floor with projecting corbelled cills. The building is topped with a corbelled wallhead cornice and rusticated quoins. The windows are architraved, with four-pane timber sash and case frames, smaller panes at the top, and blind boxes at the first floor. The second floor features pediments, while the third floor has lugged windows. The side elevation includes single and paired windows, with multi-pane windows at the ground floor that have undergone various alterations, mostly featuring eight-pane timber sash and case frames on the upper floors.

On the front elevation, there are two large keystoned and segmental-headed windows at the center with nine-pane glazing. To the left is a panelled public house door, and to the right is a close door, each with a fanlight (the fanlight at the public house is masked) and keystoned segmental-headed doorcases. Each upper floor has four windows.

The elevation facing Meadow Lane has a door and various windows at the ground floor, with single and bipartite wind-blinded windows on the upper floors. There is a wallhead stack and a stack rising through the eaves. The interior has not been seen.
