Description

2 Panmure Street in Dundee is a former bank building designed by Alexander Johnston in 1878. It is a three-storey structure with a basement, situated on a sloping site, and features a classical design with twelve bays. The building is constructed from cream sandstone ashlar, with a rusticated ground floor and a concealed roof. It has a base course and a corniced ground floor, along with a cill course at the ground, first, and second floors. The wallhead is adorned with paterae, which are intersected by corbels that support a cornice and a balustraded parapet with dies. The central section features a broken segmental pediment topped with a ball finial and a segmental monogrammed panel at the rounded angle.

The corners of the building are accentuated by channelled pilaster strips, and the windows on the ground and first floors are segmental-headed with mask keystones. The first-floor windows are architraved and corniced, with two center bays featuring consoled and pedimented designs. The second-floor windows are architraved and angled, consisting of bipartite and round-headed designs with channelled pilaster strips in the two center bays. The building has two-pane timber sash and case glazing, corniced ridge stacks, and a segmental-capped stack at the angle.

The front elevation is nearly symmetrical, featuring paired round-headed doors with fanlights and a moulded doorcase at the slightly advanced center bays. These are linked by Doric-piered doorpieces and an entablature with triglyphs and paterae. The parapet has blind tracery, with two windows on the first floor and two bipartite windows on the second floor. To the left, there are four bays with windows on each floor, and a rounded angle bay at the far left that includes a keystoned round-headed doorcase, a tripartite stilted-arch window with a consoled cornice on the first floor, and a bipartite round-headed window on the second. The right side has five bays, with three basement windows featuring iron grilles, a round-headed door at the center flanked by two windows, and five windows on both the first and second floors.

The Meadowside elevation includes five windows on the ground, first, and second floors. The interior has not been seen.
