Description

James Thomson, circa 1880, ground floor bank by Andrew

Balfour and Stewart 1924. 4-storey and attic, free classical,

commercial building with modern classical bank at ground,

symmetrical 5-bay ground floor, 7 windows above. Polished

ashlar, granite faced ground floor. Windows altered.

GROUND FLOOR: outer entrance bays breaking forward with

architraved doorpieces, triglyph frieze with relief profile

panels; central bays partially altered, divided by fluted,

semi-engaged Roman Doric columns. Ground floor mutule

cornice. Bank interior re-modelled.

UPPER FLOORS: windows arranged 2-3-2. 1st floor anta

pilastraded glazing, dentil cornice. 2nd floor plain anta

pilastrade. 3rd floor Corinthian pilasters, arched, scroll

keyblocked, ovolo archivolt. Panelled frieze with sculpted

rosettes, dentil band. Cornice, bracketted over central bays.

2 segmentally pedimented, aediculed dormers in pavilion roof

with end stacks, central dormer. Shaped lintels, hipped roof

with outer round-arched dormers. Die parapet, balustrade

removed. Slate roof.
