Description
78-82 Union Street in Glasgow is a four-storey and attic commercial building designed in a free classical style, dating from around 1880, with a ground floor bank added in 1924 by Andrew Balfour and Stewart. The building features a symmetrical five-bay ground floor and seven windows above, with a polished ashlar and granite-faced ground floor. The windows have been altered over time.
On the ground floor, the outer entrance bays project forward and have architraved doorpieces, along with a triglyph frieze that includes relief profile panels. The central bays have been partially altered and are separated by fluted, semi-engaged Roman Doric columns. A mutule cornice runs along the ground floor.
The upper floors display a window arrangement of 2-3-2. The first floor features anta pilastraded glazing and a dentil cornice, while the second floor has a plain anta pilastrade. The third floor is adorned with Corinthian pilasters and features arched openings with scroll keyblocks and ovolo archivolts. A panelled frieze with sculpted rosettes and a dentil band is present, along with a cornice that is bracketted over the central bays.
The roof is a hipped design with shaped lintels and includes two segmentally pedimented, aediculed dormers in the pavilion roof, as well as end stacks and a central dormer. The die parapet and balustrade have been removed, and the building is topped with a slate roof.
