Description

19-23 Hope Street in Glasgow is a four-storey and attic classical commercial building, dating from around 1875. The exterior is richly detailed and finished in polished ashlar, with modern shops occupying the ground floor.

The main entrance at No 21 features a broken segmental pediment supported by massive sculpted consoles, a sculpted tympanum, a double-leaf panelled door, and a fanlight above. There is also a single console at the southernmost bay. All the windows are plate-glass, sash, and case.

On the first floor, there is a sculpted swag frieze. The second floor showcases a one-third fluted Roman Ionic pilastrade with disc necking, which widens to piers at the outer bays. The windows on this level are shell-headed and pilastered, complete with moulded cills and aprons, and there is a dentil cornice above.

The third floor features a Corinthian pilastrade with piers at the outer bays, a frieze, and a dentil and modillion cornice. The attic is adorned with five console pedimented wallhead dormers, separated by six panelled and corniced single flue stacks. The outer bays have a balustraded parapet topped with sculpted urns, and the roof is hipped and covered with slate, complete with finials.
