Description

320-336 Argyle Street in Glasgow is a six-storey hotel built around 1897, likely by architect Alex Petrie, with later reconstruction and additions by William Barclay in 1937. The building features a free classical style and a symmetrical design, with modern shops occupying the ground floor and a public house located at No 316, which retains its original arched fascia.

The facade consists of six bays and twelve windows above the second floor, constructed from polished red ashlar, which is channelled at the first floor. The windows are sash and case type, set within architraves. The first-floor windows are arranged in three-light groups within Venetian arched recesses, connected by an impost band. Giant slim Corinthian pilasters separate the bays on the second and third floors. There is a cill band on the second floor, and the outer bays feature a pierced die parapet topped with ball finials. The third floor also has a cill band and a geometric frieze. The fourth and fifth floors mirror the second and third floors but do not have parapets.

The building is topped with a plain frieze and a dentil cornice, with a die parapet that includes four corniced wallhead stacks, which break through at the ends.

Inside the public house, there is a stylised columned interior and a carved timber gantry.
