Description

The Clydesdale Bank, located on West Campbell Street in Glasgow, is a four-storey office building designed by James Thomson of Baird and Thomson in 1892, showcasing Italian Renaissance architectural style. The ground floor houses a bank, which has been altered at No 340, and the building features six by five bays. It is constructed from polished red ashlar with vermiculated surrounds at the ground floor west return and includes a plinth. The windows are sash and case, set within architraves.

On the elevation facing Argyle Street, the bays are arranged in a pattern of 1-4-1. The ground floor has arched windows with moulded imposts and cills. There are coupled central entrances with double-leaf panelled doors and bracketed pedestals above. The ground floor also features a frieze and a dentil cornice. The central section, which consists of four bays and is supported by Corinthian columns, has recessed glazing that extends from the first to the second floor, with balconies between the floors and a sculpted frieze above. A continuous dentil band and a modillion cornice run along the top, with recessed, architraved windows on the third floor.

The outer bays have console corniced windows on the first floor, and a sculpted frieze that forms a cill band on the second floor, with tripartite windows on the third floor.

On the elevation facing West Campbell Street, the ground floor features arched windows with scroll keyblocks and cast-iron grilles. There are canted bays on the first and second floors, specifically in the first, third, and fifth bays from the south. The first-floor windows have console cornices, while the second-floor windows are pedimented within the canted bays. The third-floor windows match those on the Argyle Street elevation. The building has axial stacks and a slate roof.
