Description

No. 1 and 3 Market Place is a bank building, now used as offices, dating from around 1900. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a granite ground floor and features a roof that is not visible. The building is designed in the Classical Revival style and stands four storeys tall, with a six-window range. The windows are primarily metal-framed cross casements.

The central recessed section is framed by three giant Corinthian columns and contains four windows with bracketed sills and cornices. The end bays are rusticated and slightly project, each featuring a single corniced window on every floor. Above this, there is a full-width dentilled cornice that is set forward at the ends.

The attic storey has four windows in the centre, each with Gibbs surrounds and inverted consoles between them. The end bays, which are slightly forward, have pilasters adorned with festoons and single windows topped with triple keystones. Above this section is a moulded cornice and blocking course.

The rusticated arcaded ground floor showcases round arches with scroll keystones. In the centre, there are four margin-glazed windows with bronze frames, while at each end, there are pairs of panelled double bronze doors with overlights. The interior has not been inspected.
