Description
The White Building is a Grade II listed structure located in Sheffield, built around 1908 by the architectural firm Flockton & Gibbs, featuring relief panels by Tory Bros. The building is faced with white faience and has a red granite plinth. It consists of four storeys plus a five-storey cubic central block and has a five-window range.
The exterior includes a plinth, pilasters, a third-floor sill band, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are primarily wooden cross casements. On the first floor, each bay features a cross casement French window flanked by single light windows with transoms, all fronted by a wrought-iron balcony. The French windows are adorned with enriched segmental pediments and roundels. The second floor has two-light mullioned windows flanked by single light windows, all with transoms, and a moulded lintel band. The third floor mirrors the first floor's fenestration, with swept pediments above the French windows. The central block, which has three windows, follows the second floor's design and includes drip moulds above the central windows.
The ground floor is arcaded with plain elliptical arches, featuring a recessed entrance in the center and late 20th-century shopfronts on the outer arches. In the spandrels, there are low-relief panels depicting silversmithing, cutlery making, and other Sheffield trades, along with the monograms "W T F" and "A T H". The interior has not been inspected.
