Description

This is a mid-18th century house that was later used as a bank, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and the early 20th century. The building is constructed of brick and ashlar, with painted ashlar dressings. Four side wall stacks and a single ridge stack are visible, all with coped tops.

The central block is four storeys high and has a four-window front. It features a string course, a modillion cornice, and moulded eaves. The first floor has four 12-pane windows with moulded surrounds and cornices. The second floor has four 12-pane sashes with similar surrounds, and the third floor has nine-pane sashes with similar surrounds. A single-storey ashlar addition projects from the ground floor, featuring a plinth, rebated round corners, quoins, a dentilled cornice, and a parapet. This addition has three round-arched single-pane windows with fanlights, keystones, and impost bands.

To the right of the central block is a mid-19th century addition, three storeys high and with a two-window front. It includes string courses, a sill band, and a coped parapet. The upper floors have eight-pane sashes with brick flat arches, and plain sashes with recessed panels above. A projecting ashlar entrance features a dentilled cornice and balustrade, with a frieze inscribed "Sheffield Banking Co. Ltd." The entrance has granite columns on traceried ashlar pedestals, a rusticated surround, and double sliding glazed doors with sidelights and lattice overlights. A round-arched doorway with an overlight is adjacent to this. To the left is a mid-19th century block, two storeys high with a two-window front, string course and coped parapet with plain sashes and brick flat arches. An early 20th century block, single storey and four windows wide, is on the far left, with a granite plinth, quoins, alternating scrolled and gabled pediments, four single-pane round-headed windows with fanlights, heavily rusticated openings, and two segment-headed basement openings with keystones.

The interior features a two-storey banking hall with pilastered walls, Doric arcades on three sides supported by granite columns, a dentilled cornice, and a cross beam ceiling. There are two Renaissance Revival style stone fireplaces. A single-storey addition follows a similar design.
