Description

Barclays Bank is a bank building dated 1895, with alterations made in the late 20th century. It features ashlar and polished granite construction, with ashlar dressings and a slate hipped roof that has a flat top. There are two coped and panelled stacks on the side walls. The building stands three storeys plus attics and has a five-window range. The projecting centre has three windows beneath a coped pediment, which is topped with a finial and a coat of arms.

The first and second floors each have three cross casements framed by Ionic columns, with a similar window on each side that has a carved lintel. Both floors are adorned with cornices, with the upper cornice being dentilled. The attic storey features double angle pilasters and three two-light mullioned windows, with the central window showcasing a mask keystone, flanked by single windows. All windows in this section have enriched keystones, and the mansard roof includes two small round windows.

The granite ground floor is framed by Doric columns that support a basket arched arcade, which contains a central late 20th-century glazed door flanked by two windows, all featuring fanlights. The right return has three windows topped with a segmental pediment and a datestone. On the upper floors, there is a central blank space flanked by single windows, while the ground floor has two blank spaces and a late 20th-century window. To the right, there is a single-storey range with five blank bays and rusticated pilasters, along with a late 20th-century addition above. The interior was refitted in the late 20th century.
