Description
This building at 286 Clyde Street in Glasgow dates from around 1855 and is a three-storey classical tenement located on a corner. It is part of a larger block and features a basement level facing Clyde Street, with an additional attic added later. The facade consists of five by eleven bays, arranged three to eight on Dixon Street. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with a channelled design at the ground floor and basement. All windows are sash and case, set within architraves, with some featuring 12-pane glazing. There is a band-course at ground floor level and cill bands on the first and second floors.
The corner section, which was formerly an end pavilion, includes a Doric pedimented portico leading to the stair on Clyde Street, and a Roman Ionic pedimented doorpiece with steps up to Dixon Street. The ground floor windows have corbelled aprons and are consoled with a continuous cornice that breaks forward over the windows. The first-floor windows are also console pedimented, while the second-floor windows have recessed architraves and dropped detailing. A dentil band cornice runs along the second-floor entablature, topped by a die parapet.
On the eight-bay northern section facing Dixon Street, there are console corniced entrances to Nos 3 and 5. The first-floor windows are console corniced, and the second-floor windows match those on Clyde Street. There are two dormers on this section, a slate roof, and corniced axial stacks with decorative pots.
