Description
La Pasionaria is a statue of Dolores Ibarruri located on Clyde Street in Glasgow, created by Arthur Dooley between 1974 and 1979. The statue features a tall, narrow steel pedestal and plinth that support a standing fiberglass figure of Ibarruri, depicted with her arms stretched skyward and wearing flowing drapery to the north.
On the south elevation, the steel pedestal includes a plaque that reads: "THE CITY OF GLASGOW AND THE BRITISH LABOUR MOVEMENT pay tribute to the courage of those men and women who went to Spain to fight Fascism 1936-1939. 2,100 VOLUNTEERS WENT FROM BRITAIN; 534 WERE KILLED, 65 OF WHOM CAME FROM GLASGOW." The steel plinth also features a plaque with the quote: "BETTER TO DIE ON YOUR FEET THAN LIVE FOR EVER ON YOUR KNEES - Dolores Ibarruri (La Pasionaria)."
