Description

Martyrs' monument erected 1847 by public subscription to commemorate John Baird and Andrew Hardie who were executed in Stirling, September 1820, "suffering death for the cause of freedom". The classical monument is composed of a tall pedestal with bellcast cap, supporting a draped urn, standing on a raised plinth, approximately 5m high, in grey sandstone. Inscribed panels on each face of plinth, has relief sculpture of classical scene on one face of pedestal.
