Description
110 Flemington Street in Glasgow is a building designed by James Miller between 1903 and 1909 as offices for the North British Locomotive Company. It was converted into an engineering college from 1962 to 1965. The structure consists of four tall ranges surrounding an open square courtyard. The street elevation showcases a rich Edwardian Baroque style, featuring symmetrical red ashlar stonework, while the remainder of the building is mostly clad in brick and the courtyard is finished with glazed tiles. The building stands four storeys high, including a full attic storey, with a giant central section and outer pavilions. Intermediate two-window bays are accented with giant pilaster strips that cover the steel framework. The entrance, supported by Ionic columns, features a broken pediment with figures on either side, and the tympanum carving depicts a locomotive. The central area has three light windows with columned mullions, and original glazing is present throughout, with some glazing bars shaped like a pediment. The outer elevations are simpler, with a series of roof pitches that are lit on the north face. Inside, the principal rooms also display Edwardian Baroque ornamentation. Notably, there are three windows above the main stairwell that commemorate the First World War, created by William Meikle and Sons and unveiled in 1921. The courtyard is characterized by impressive polychrome brick walls.
