Description
Sighthill Cemetery, located on a hillside site, opened in 1840. The lodge and gatepiers on Springburn Road were designed by John Stephen of Scott Stephen and Gale in 1839, featuring an Egypto-Greek style. The lodge has a rectangular plan and is elaborately detailed, resembling a small temple. The block-pedimented end faces the roadside, with a pair of columns in antis flanking the doorway and an urn finial on top. The west gable is similarly designed but includes a window, and the flanks are pilastraded. The gatepiers are painted, square, and each has a channelled base with ramped panels on the faces, topped with urn finials raised on square pedestals. There are modern iron gates and railings. Additionally, there is a decorative cast-iron gateway leading to Keppochill Road. The cemetery contains an extensive series of stone monuments, some of high quality, including a monument to the martyrs of the 1820 Rising, which is listed separately. Other notable monuments include one to William Leiper, dated 1867 and erected by his pupils, in a French Gothic design and presumably by his son, who is also commemorated here, as well as monuments to the Mossmans, sculptors, and the Keppie family.
