Description
St Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, located at 6 Hillkirk Street in Springburn, Glasgow, was designed by J L Bruce of Bruce and Sturrock and built between 1881 and 1882. This Gothic-style church features a gabled west front with a porch on the north side and an original baptistry on the south side. The gable end has a low, partly blind arcade with triple lights above, flanked by niches. The roof is covered with slate and red ridge tiles, topped with cross finials, and includes north and south transepts.
Inside, the church has a nave, north and south aisles, and an apse with flanking chapels to the east, along with a deep organ gallery at the west. The narrow arched nave arcades are supported by clustered columns, and the triple-arched east end frames the apse, which features stenciled mouldings. The altar rail, altar, and reredos are elaborately carved in stone and marble, complete with a pinnacled canopy. The roof is wide and arch-braced, incorporating cusped skylights.
Adjacent to the church is the presbytery, built in 1880, which has three asymmetrical bays. It includes a central timber porch and an advanced bay to the left with tripartite windows, all featuring 4-centred arched heads. The presbytery is constructed of bull-faced rubble with ashlar dressings and has a slate roof with a red tile ridge.
