Description

Elmvale Primary School, built in 1901 by H E Cliffrd as a board school, features Art Nouveau ornamentation. The building is a tall red ashlar block with three storeys above a rock-faced basement. It has a piended slate roof with unusual curved deep eaves and stacks, along with distinctive leaded roof ventilators at each roof piend. The north and south elevations are nearly identical, each showcasing a three-bay centrepiece with full-height pilaster strips and a curved pediment shape over the wall-head. The longer flank elevations include a low entrance bay and ranks of single windows, with the upper windows featuring colonnaded mullions and a full-width balcony that has eaves swept over. There is a two-storey Janitor's Lodge to the northwest, which has a steep piended and platformed roof, an advanced centre gabled bay to the west, and prominent end stacks. The playground walls are mainly made of red ashlar, with modern sections at the north, and are complemented by wrought-iron gates and railings.
