Description

Redclyffe House is a two-storey, two-bay semi-detached villa designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1890 for his cousin James Hamilton. It is constructed from stugged and snecked coarse red ashlar sandstone with polished dressings. The design is symmetrical, featuring a large canted and piended outer bay on each side, with both single and mullioned window openings. The ground floor includes cross-mullion windows in the canted bays. The villa at No. 140, which is the southern house, has leaded upper panels, while the original upper sashes were small-paned and the lower sashes were mostly two-paned.

The slate roof slopes down between two lower, closely spaced narrow bays and has bracketed eaves and chimneystacks. There is an architraved door on either side of the building.

Redclyffe House is set back from the pavement behind a low boundary wall and features wrought iron gates and railings with curved longitudinal rails, which are not original. There are also gatepiers at the south.
