Description
Springburn Park in Glasgow features a substantial glasshouse built by Simpson and Farmer, hothouse builders, in collaboration with William Baird of Temple ironworks, between 1899 and 1900. The glasshouse is approximately 180 feet long and has tall red brick walls that rise about 12 feet, with round arched windows. The main block is spanned by seven arch-framed lattice girders that support an extensive glass roof, which is boldly curved at angles and consists of wide overlapping layers of glass. A low clerestory runs along the ridge, topped with decorative brattishing in a thistle design. Inside, a gallery surrounds the space and is accessed by cast-iron stairs, featuring decorative cast-iron balustrades.
