Description

The Vinery at St Fagans Castle is a glasshouse dating from the 19th century. It features a rectangular span roof and is constructed as a timber structure resting on a brick dwarf wall. At the time of inspection, it did not have glass. The dwarf wall is built on stone slabs and is supported by evenly spaced piers made of yellow brick, along with a masonry wall at the western end.

The timber structure consists of two compartments, each containing 7 bays and 4 lights, with principal rafters dividing each bay. There is ironwork retaining trusses beneath the timber frame. The top lights can be opened using connecting levers and mechanisms. There are entrances at both ends, featuring part-panelled and part-glazed doors. Each gable is topped with a decorative finial.

Inside, there is a central walkway with paving slabs to the west and Victorian cast-iron floor grating to the east. Long narrow beds with vines are situated along the north and south walls, equipped with heating pipes and additional beds in front.
