Description

The presbytery to the Roman Catholic Church of St Aloysius was built in 1877-1878 by William Wilkinson of Oxford. It is constructed from yellow brick with Bathstone dressings and features some red brick diapering. The building has a gabled roof with stone coping, which has been reclad in concrete tiles, and brick lateral stacks, one of which has stone shafts.

This large presbytery is designed in the Victorian Gothic style and has a side entrance facing the church forecourt on the left, with the principal rooms located on the road front. The exterior is three storeys high. The east front presents an asymmetrical arrangement of four windows in two gables; the right gable has three windows on the ground floor and a canopied niche that serves as a corbel for the lateral stack above. The left gable features a buttress between two ground floor windows. The windows are pointed arch with transoms, and the ground and second storeys include quatrefoil-pierced tracery and hoodmoulds, with a continuous hoodmould on the ground floor. There are also two additional stringcourses above.

The left-hand south return serves as the entrance front facing the church forecourt and is asymmetrical. It includes a large lateral stack with a buttress, a canopied niche, and brick shafts. The central gabled portal has a moulded pointed arch, with an integral oriel window above and a tall stair window to the right. To the left, there is a gabled bay with two and three-light Gothic windows featuring transoms. Set back on the left is a lower two-storey wing. The interior has not been inspected.
